Huangshan City, formerly called Huizhou was known as Xin'an in ancient China. Located in the south of Anhui Province, Huangshan City is an up and coming tourist city named after Mt. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), consisting of the Mt. Huangshan scenic area, three districts and four counties. With an area of 9807 square kilometres and a population of 1.45 million, the holiday resort of Huangshan City offers spectacular scenery, numerous places of interest and fascinating local culture. | |

The most notable scenic area covers 154 square kilometres and reaches an altitude of over 1800 metres. Once known as Mt. Yishan, this is where Emperor Xuanyuan is said to have prepared herbal medicines several thousand years ago. The mountain was renamed Huangshan in 747, the sixth year of Emperor Tianbao of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Vertical slabs of granite, eroded and fractured over thousands of years, have created soaring pillars of rock and deep ravines. Swirling mists constantly envelop and then reveal the jagged rock faces. The area is famous for an indigenous pine, the pinus huangshanensis. A symbol of determination and persistence, this hardy tree makes its home in tiny crevices in the rock. With roots several times longer than its trunk, its top flattened by wind and its branches growing in one direction (with the wind or towards the sun), some of the trees in this area have become national symbols, as emotive as the impressive peaks themselves .
Huangshan's flora includes a unique species of pine tree. This one, known as "yingkesong", (Welcoming Guests Pine) is probably China's most famous. The flat-topped Huanghshan pine sinks deep roots, usually five times the length of its trunk, into tiny crevices in the rock face. Able to survive in harsh conditions, the tree symbolizes determination and persistence. .
Li Bai (701-762), one of the greatest Tang dynasty poets, discovered and named the Yellow Mountains during his sojourn here:
"Thousands of feet high tower the Yellow Mountains With their thirty-two magnificent peaks, Blooming like golden lotus flowers, Amidst red crags and rock columns."
